Based on operetta by Tadeusz Dobrzański “The King‘s Loge”

The libretto and music stylistics of the operetta “The King‘s Loge” reflect both – classical traditions of this genre and the traditions from the middle of the 20th century. There are all the necessary attributes: a king’s mansion, fictitious monarchy, disguises and misunderstandings, a couple of comic characters; and everything is crowned with music, which is weaved from Parisian jingles, good old Viennese Waltz, and fiery Latin American melodies.

For this festival the libretto of the operetta “The King’s Loge” was edited and adapted according to the musical stage traditions of the present day, more significant plot accents were chosen, more vivid line of intrigue was highlighted.  The changes are reflected also in the changed title of the performance – “The King’s Double”.

The Director of the operetta Kęstutis Jakštas says that its plot seems carelessly jolly only at the first glance, as it also speaks about eternal matters, like love and betrayal, true and false virtues. Yet another thing – the public mechanism in the society is also a well-marked issue here; as well as superficiality of political structures, self-seeking, and social-climbing. And although the story is old, it is clear that nothing really changed: a person with an inborn conscience finds it very difficult to settle in this world. In the society of opportunists and careerists he is considered an outsider. Nonetheless, such a person is the happiest because he is the only engine of the humankind progress.

After all, this is operetta and love is almighty here…
